Save the Peel Watershed! – Endless

During our unforgettable flight over the Yukon’s magnificent Peel Watershed one of our dedicated group members, Rae Stoetzel, captured this beautiful image, and it gives you a good idea of the endless mountain ranges, which are also home to alpine lakes, valleys and vast planes permeated by unpolluted rivers. Did you know that there is a fight to protect this pristine wilderness from being opened up to potential mining (minerals, oil and gas) and industrial development?

Save the Peel Watershed! – Beyond Words.

The Peel River Watershed is one of North America’s most striking and pristine mountain river watersheds– a region of mountains, deep canyons, plateaus, wetlands and rolling hills, laced by rivers. Sprawling over 68,000 square kilometres, it dwarfs more famous landscapes, such as Banff and Yellowstone national parks–in size, unspoiled splendor and ecological integrity. This image was taken during a mind blowing 1 hour flight by float plane to our destination, and it gives you a good idea of the indescribable majesty of it all. We flew over endless mountain ranges and colorful tundra valleys, permeated by clean, unpolluted, free flowing rivers. We flew through sunshine and rain showers,we were blessed with rainbows over meandering river valleys, and spectacular spotlight on the jagged mountains sometimes so close, you felt you could reach out and touch them. It is an experience we will never forget and it gave us a deep appreciation of the meaning of majestic, unspoilt and unbroken wildernesses. There are so few left in our world, and we have to do all we can to protect them!

Save the Peel Watershed! – Untamed Lands

In August 2015, a group of 7 photographers embarked on a 10 day conservation photography expedition deep into the wild, pristine, breathtakingly beautiful Peel Watershed in Canada’s Yukon Territory, which is in danger of being mined. The scenery was awe inspiring, the conditions challenging, the experience uplifting, and we left with memories to last us a lifetime. I am excited to share with you our first in a series of images from this natural treasure, and we hope that the beauty you see will encourage you to share our images and conservation message with your friends. It is our goal to build as much awareness as possible of this remote area, which we feel will greatly enhance its chances of being protected. This gorgeous aerial was taken by our group member, Marina Klein, on our mind blowing flight by float plane over endless mountain ranges and tundra covered river valleys, alternately spotlit by the sun breaking through rain showers sweeping over this indescribably beautiful wilderness.

A World in One Country – Painted by Light

A beautiful late afternoon at the glorious Cape Peninsula, South Africa. This is a much photographed location, with the world famous Chapman’s Peak in the background. I tried a different composition, some distance from the main viewpoint. It was late afternoon and the sun, setting over the ocean, was partly obscured by a cloud bank above the horizon. This resulted in rapidly changing lighting conditions, painting the mountain side with beautiful, dappled light. I took 4 separate images, and later combined them to form this panorama, which I feel best captures the grandeur of the scene. The bouquet of flowers forms a nice complimentary compositional element.

A majestic view of dramatic coastal mountains, Chapmans Peak and Hout Bay as seen from Chapmans Peak Drive, Cape Peninsula, South Africa. Warm afternoon light spotlights this beautiful scene with a complement of beautiful pink flowers from the Rushia genus.

A World in One Country – Convergence

Don’t let the weather get you down. There always are opportunities, you just have to allow yourself to see them! In this long exposure, the pitch black rocks, so typical of South Africa’s gorgeous Tsitsikamma National Park, contrast beautifully against the whites of crashing waves, and the combination of grey skies and blue water is always beautiful!

A World in One Country – Radiance

A beautiful, moody morning at South Africa’s Cape Point Nature Reserve. Humid air, blown inland by gale force winds, climbed the abruptly ending mountain side and formed fast moving clouds racing over Cape Point’s plains. The rising sun broke through the clouds, painting the landscape in spectacular and rapidly changing light. I found myself scrambling to get a composition which would be worthy of conveying its beauty. I was lucky to find this burnt tree, a stark reminder of frequent fires, which, together with the surrounding boulders, balanced the composition and contributed to the somewhat ominous mood I was trying to convey.

A World in One Country – Gold Coast

A beautiful late afternoon at the glorious Cape Peninsula, South Africa. This is a much beloved area, with world famous Chapman’s Peak in the background, and it is one of the locations we will visit on our “Spectacular South Africa” photography tour. I tried a different composition, some distance from the main viewpoint. It was late afternoon and the sun, setting over the ocean, was partly obscured by a cloud bank above the horizon. This resulted in rapidly changing lighting conditions, painting the mountain side with beautiful, dappled light. This photograph was taken shortly after the sun had passed the cloud bank. Wonderful golden light streamed onto the ocean and mountains, and I quickly took this image to capture the beautiful, fleeting moment.

A World in One Country – Together Forever

It was a wonderful moment to be able to behold and capture. An Ostrich couple, together with its chick (not in frame), were feeding in the late afternoon sun amongst the plains of South Africa’s Cape Point Nature Reserve. This is one of the locations we will visit on our “Spectacular South Africa” photography tour. I did not have a telephoto lens with me so I had to approach the pair, without disturbing them. To be close to such wonderful animals, to hear them walk and eat, is a true privilege. I was able to follow them for a few minutes before they wandered off over the hills and blended into the vast plains.

A World in One Country – Rush

During the months of December /January strong and often gale force winds are common in the Cape Peninsula, South Africa. This is one of the locations we will visit on our “Spectacular South Africa” photography tour. That day the winds punished my legs with projectile sand grains. Fortunately I could wrap my sweater around my knees, which gave me temporary relief. The combination of dramatic mountain ranges, breaking waves and the water rushing in at the shore to me best illustrates the dramatic beauty and power of this region of the world.

A World in One Country – Last Light

Phenomenal last light on a cloudy evening in West Coast National Park, South Africa. Although it had been cloudy all day, I took my chances and decided to photograph the untouched, wild coast line of this lesser known National Park. It all paid off when, just before the sun dipped below the horizon, there was a slight break in the clouds. A long exposure before all light extinguished brought out the beautiful moody colors of that evening.
